Kumihimo Beaded Bracelet

Explore the ancient art of Kumihimo, a Japanese braiding technique. Students will learn the traditional 8-cord round braid and how to incorporate beads into the design. Class fee includes a kumihimo disc which can be used to make additional bracelets and necklaces. Once you learn the pattern you can create kumihimo braids using cord, silk, and wire.

Please note: Project may not be completed in class, but students will leave with the knowledge and findings necessary to complete the bracelet.

Silver Leaf Necklace

Use a real leaf from home or from the Arboretum to design a beautiful pendant accented with a sparkling gemstone. Each necklace will be unique and the perfect memento of your visit to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Pieces are made using Art Clay Silver which becomes pure silver once fired. Completed jewelry pieces will be fired after class and available for pickup at the Arboretum in one week or can be shipped.

Students will Learn:
Basic metal clay techniques including working with the clay, sanding, and finishing; how to create a clay gemstone bezel for a CZ; how to design a coil bail.

Mokume gane is a Japanese technique of combining different metals together to create beautiful patterns reminiscent of wood-grain. When working using traditional metalsmithing techniques it can be a very labor-intensive process that requires special tools and equipment. Luckily this technique can be done in metal clay, saving time and material. In this class, you will learn several mokume gane techniques using Art Clay Copper and Silver to create stunning one-of-a-kind jewelry.
